For Tesco, the UK’s leading grocery retailer, modernizing their digital presence meant securely hosting a new Identity website and an International Grocery website on the AWS cloud. KO Technologies delivered a comprehensive AWS Cloud & DevOps Services solution that focused on building a secure, scalable, and automated container platform. Challenges

  • New Application Hosting: The requirement to host a new International Grocery Website and Identity Service on AWS.
  • Container Platform Implementation: The application stack was Node.js and Docker, necessitating the creation of Tesco’s first container platform within the AWS environment.
  • Automation and CI/CD: A need for modern CI/CD pipelines and a comprehensive automation test capability for continuous, high-quality deployments.

Solutions

  • AWS Container Platform; Terraform automation was used to create AWS ECS clusters, establishing Tesco’s first container platform in AWS.
  • New Application Stack: Implementation of the new application stack infrastructure, network, cloud adoption, and automation.
  • CI/CD Pipelines: Introduced Jenkins pipelines to build Docker images for ECR, update task definitions, and create CI/CD pipelines for all application environments.
  • Automation Testing: Developed a high-impact Automation Test capability using a Headless testing SDET stack (Selenium, Chrome Driver, Ruby, Cucumber) created in Docker containers for overnight testing of international site settings.
  • Secure Connectivity: Established a robust network connection, initially via a site-to-site VPN and later upgraded to a high-bandwidth Direct Connect between AWS and the Tesco DC.
