Cloud Modernisation

For Hertfordshire County Council’s Assistive Technology department, the goal was a modern platform to help people maintain their independence and receive remote care using IOT devices. KO Technologies delivered a secure, cost-effective, and highly performant platform by focusing on serverless AWS services. We built the logic using a bespoke combination of API Gateway, Lambda (GoLang/GO), SQS, SNS, and EventBridge, alongside a scalable DynamoDB data storage. This fully automated, IaC-driven solution established a world-class remote care capability for the pre-revenue department.

Hertfordshire County Council’s Assistive Technology department focuses on using core technology to help people stay at home longer and maintain their independence. The system uses modern AWS and IOT devices to enable remote care, with metrics from IOT devices sent to AWS for processing, allowing carers and family members to visually monitor activity. The department is currently pre-revenue.

Challenges

  • Assist and improve the IOT device management.
  • Build the Linux Hub Firmware and create images for deploying to the IOT Hub.
  • Create the production ready capability using IaC.
  • Create website infrastructure for the marketing and application websites.
  • DynamoDB data pruning and purging to requirements to respect GDPR laws.
  • Integrate the application site with AD SSO.
  • Ensure AWS hosting costs are kept to a minimum.

Solutions

  • Serverless IOT Architecture: Created a bespoke, high-performance, and secure serverless capability using API Gateway, Lambda (GoLang/GO), SQS, SNS, EventBridge, and Cognito.
  • Automated Firmware: Created a fully automated Docker image to build the enhanced Linux firmware for the HUB, hosted on a cost-saving, autoscaling AWS EC2 instance.
  • Data Managemen: Implemented a scalable DynamoDB instance with a TTL processor, Kinesis streams, Firehose, and a custom Lambda for data purging to S3 archiving to ensure GDPR compliance.
  • Web Hosting & IaC: Deployed web applications using S3 and Cloudfront with AWS Certificate Manager for security, all provisioned with repeatable and reliable IaC.
